5 Ways To Boost Your Emotional Fitness

Emotional Fitness

The fast pace of modern day life can weigh you down if you don’t find ways to stay emotionally fit.

I know from first-hand experience, that finding the right balance between business, social, family and personal life can be tough if you don’t prioritise what truly matters and learn to master your emotions.

In my life, I’ve learned that things rarely go according to plan.

That’s why I believe resilience is one of the most powerful qualities we can develop. And why learning to embrace the good and the bad and living in a joyful state no matter what the circumstances is a ‘skill’ worth mastering.

It’s also so important to find happiness in the little things – like the smile on your kid’s face, the country we live in, the music you listen to and didn’t write, the internet you use but didn’t create, the sand on your feet etc.

These conscious little perspectives can be really powerful when you bring them to the fore of your mind regularly.

For what it’s worth to you, I’d like to share with you my 5 tips for staying emotionally fit that help me every day:

1. Practise Gratitude – By always seeing the glass half full rather than half empty, it helps to see the world through a brighter coloured lense. Take a few minutes every morning to identify and give thanks to the good things that you have in your life;

2. Feed Your Mind – The late, great Jim Rohn used to teach, that we should stand guard to the doorway of our mind and feed it something healthy every day. The problem is that our mind is a 2 million year old machine built by default for survival, not necessarily to do what’s best for us. That’s why we need to proactively expose our minds to quality messages that help us to expand, grow and feel alive;

3. Choose Positive People – There’s no quicker way to stagnate in life than to hang around negative or destructive people. Be very conscious about who you spend most time with as there is much truth to the notion that you become the sum total of your 5 closest friends. Seek out and choose positive, supportive people and “tribes” that can help and inspire you to be the best you;

4. Practise Your Passion – Don Tolman teaches that ‘Passion’ is a compound word that means the ‘passing of ions’. Finding and practising your passion, simply means to make time to do the things that light you up and fill your soul with positive energy. If you feel you may have lost your passion, think back to the activities that brought you the most joy as a child and experiment with versions of those things that you can practice at this stage in your life. For me, one of my greatest passions as a kid was BMX racing and today at 45 years old, I’ve transferred that to Mountain Biking and adventure racing, which are my favourite things to do.

5. Connect with the Earth – By being more connected with the divine force that is Mother Earth, we flood ourselves with a sense of awe and appreciation for what she offers us. Whenever you can, get outside into the sun, walk on the beach, hike in the woods, breathe clean, pure air and consciously connect yourself with the earth.

To me, all of these things are like energetic fuel – simple tools that can help you to navigate the game of life, feel great and show up as your best self more often.
