How Do You Start Each Day?

How do you start each day?

What do you do when you wake up each day?

Do you hit your alarm clock snooze button, before eventually crawling out of bed to dive under the shower, get dressed and rush out the door?

Or do you spring to your feet, throw on your activewear and get moving whilst half the world is still asleep?

How you start each morning sets the tone for your day.  And what you do consistently every morning, ultimately sets the tone for your life!

I’m a great believer in ‘knocking over’ at least 3 of the “7 Principles of Health” that Don Tolman teaches before I kiss my kids goodbye in the morning.

By owning your morning routine, by 7:30am you can easily take care of at least AIR, WATER and MOVEMENT, if not 1 or 2 more…and boy, it feels great!

If you struggle to get your day off onto the right foot, or you can’t seem to nail a routine that works for you, here’s five of my favourite personal daily habits that you might find helpful:

  1. Lightly stretch – First thing in the morning your body talks to you in unique ways. Take a few minutes to lightly stretch and wake your body up when you get out of bed before you do anything else;
  2. Drink water immediately – After a night’s sleep, your body is craving rehydration, so take a half litre of chilled clean water, add a pinch of celtic sea salt, a squeeze of lemon juice and drink this to help activate your digestive system;
  3. Get moving – Regardless of your physical condition, at the very least you should be able to do the one exercise we’re all designed to do – walk!  Get outside and walk as soon as possible when you rise.  If you do some type of indoor exercise, tag on 15-20 minutes of walking at the end.  Walking is #1…It awakens the senses, ensures you get good clean air and stimulates the peristaltic action of the intestines (so important for your long-term health);
  4. Feed your spirit – A new day is the perfect time to reflect on what’s important to you and give thanks.  Activities like sun gazing, light meditation and intentional breathing create a biochemical shift in your body that deliver emotional balance;
  5. Build mental muscle – Your mind is the command centre of everything you do, but a dormant mind that is continually on auto-pilot won’t allow you to grow.  Exercise your mental muscle by feeding it with positive and inspirational messages early in your day.  Personally, I love listening to inspirational and educational podcasts when I’m driving.  It beats the hell out of the news and gives me fresh direction and ideas to direct my day, business and life.

Make these five steps non-negotiables in your daily routine and you’ll be amazed at how they lay a perfect foundation for accelerated physical, emotional and mental health that create a ripple effect into every aspect of your life.

    Great advice but isn’t warm water better than chilled water

      First thing in the morning, chilled water kick starts your metabolism and the digestive process. Also, the ancients would drink chilled water from naturally filtered running streams for good reason – a wisdom that’s lost today.

    Thank you Zane, would love any recommendations for podcasts that you enjoy. I also have always had room temp water, chilled will be fine in our warmer months.

    Thanks for this inspiring, quick read. I say quick because it gave me the steps I need without the mumbling that so often loses me before the info sticks.

    Warm regards Jane
